I started telling them about how people sometimes blurt out things that may be hurtful without thinking. I told them that my mother had died not long before I got to town (true) and how it brought back those sad feelings. Well, I started to cry. I ended up the center of an emotional class hug of 30 little first graders. It was bonding experience and the girl, sensing an ally in this hard world she had been thrown in, became attached to me.
